The Chichester Ship Canal is owned by West Sussex County Council.  The Chichester Canal Society was formed in 1979 and acquired the lease for the Chichester Ship Canal in 1985.

In 1992 the canal was identified as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI).

In 2001 the Chichester Canal Society became the Chichester Ship Canal Trust, a registered charity.
The canal is maintained by the Trust, whose aims are the preservation, maintenance and improvement of canals, navigable rivers, and inland waterways for the public benefit, in particular the navigation between Chichester and the harbour, the Chichester Ship Canal, and the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal.  We are supported in our aims by West Sussex County Council, in particular through the Chichester Canal Restoration Project

All services on the canal are manned by volunteers from the Chichester Ship Canal Trust, who crew the trip boats, run the shop, bailiff the angling and carry out maintenance and restoration work.

The Trust is a registered charity: No. 1094873
Company Registration Number: 4525876

If you're a Trust member, you can access the website pages for members and volunteers: please contact access@chichestercanal.com and we will forward you instructions.
