Towpath closed from 17 July for 3-4 weeks
West Sussex County Council (WSCC), who are responsible for the permissive cycle route along the canal towpath from Hunston to Chichester, are resurfacing the southern half of the path, commencing Monday 17th July. Contractors expect to take three to four weeks, working between Hunston and the new ramp that provides access to Canal Walk, Donnington. Necessity dictates that the path must be CLOSED to pedestrians and cyclists throughout all this period.
The contractor will, however, make every attempt to keep the path open until 8.30 each morning during the period 17th to 21st July to allow Hunston school children to reach Chichester as normal. The path cannot be open during the afternoon because of the anticipated work.
Residents living along the northern section of the towpath – those at Canal Walk and north – should not be affected by this work.
WSCC regrets the inconvenience this will cause, as does the Canal Trust, but we believe all will agree that the towpath is in considerable need of resurfacing. Any concerns should be directed to the WSCC Rights of Way team and not to the Canal Trust.
