Dragon boats ahoy

Sunday 9th June saw Chichester’s Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge held on Chichester Canal.  The annual event raised much needed funds for Cancerwise and other local charities. The well established event, combined with fine weather, led to an incredibly busy day at the Canal. The atmosphere was electric with competitors, the amazing dance crew from the Chichester Down Syndrome Support Group, and people cheering along the water’s edge from the Canal Basin to Ponytz Bridge.  The swans and their recently hatched brood of five cygnets were quite a hit too.

With so many people enjoying what the Canal has to offer, the Canal volunteers did a sterling job, especially those in the Cafe, where the queue for refreshments snaked out the door. Visitors lined up to admire the model 1910 Canal boat, which was on the Canal Volunteer stand. And it was a fitting end to Volunteers Week that many people were finding out more about volunteering at the Canal.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the Canal can either pop into the Cafe for a chat or visit Chichester Canal’s website, www.chichestercanal.org.uk. Click on Get Involved.
